The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has won all eight seats in the local government election in Bayelsa State. The election was conducted by the Bayelsa State Independent Electoral Commission (BYSIEC) on Saturday 10th August, 2019.
The results of the election which was announced late Saturday night indicated that Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has won all eight seats in the local government election in Bayelsa State.
Our correspondents who visited four out of eight local governments reported that the All Progressives Congress (APC) did not partake in the election because of some alleged irregularities against the nomination of the BYSIEC Chairman.
The Returning Officer, Frank Ebikumor, on Sunday in Yenagoa announced that Dengiye Ubarugu of the PDP polled 42,539 votes to defeat the candidate of ADC who polled 1,031 votes in Kolokuma/Opokuma LGA.
Southern-Ijaw, the Returning Officer, Nwiwu Johnson, announced that Nigeria Kia of the PDP scored 107,150 to defeat the candidate of the AD who scored 2,489 votes.
In Ekeremor LGA, the Returning Officer, Victor Ayibatonye, announced that Perekeme Petula emerged winner with 62,529 votes, as other parties had no vote.
Also, in Sagbama LGA, where Governor Seriake Dickson hails from, the Returning Officer, ThankGod Apere, announced that Alah Embeleakpo had 96,468 votes as other parties had no vote.
In Brass LGA, the Returning Officer, Timothy Ogiaba, announced that Victor Isaiah of the PDP scored 28,667 votes while LP scored 2,948 votes.
Ogbia LGA, Ebiye Ogoli, the Returning Officer, announced that Turner Ebinyo of the PDP scored 17,661 votes to defeat the ADC candidate who scored 1,017.
And in Yenagoa, the Returning Officer, Good-head Abraham, declared that Uroupaye Nimizuoa of the PDP scored 98,831 votes to defeat Lawrence Kwokwo of ADC who scored 636 votes.
In his remarks at the declaration of election results, Remember Ogbe, the BYSIEC Chairman, said the process was peaceful in all the areas where elections were conducted.
Meanwhile, the Bayelsa State Independent Electoral Commission on Monday 12 August has issued Certificates of Return to the eight Local Government chairmen-elect who won the council election on August 10, 2019.
Also issued Certificates of Return at the BYSIEC secretariat in Yenagoa on Monday were the councillors-elect of the 105 wards in Bayelsa State.
Chairman of the BYSIEC, Mr. Remember Ogbe, who addressed the chairmen and councillors-elect, said that the electoral umpire had carried out what was required by law by issuing Certificates of Return to them.
He advised them to keep in touch with the Bayelsa State government to know when they would be inaugurated.
Ogbe said, “Now that we have presented Certificates of Return to you, the rest is for the governor to swear you in. So keep in touch with the government to know when you will be sworn in.”
In an interview with newsmen, the chairman-elect for Southern Ijaw Local Government Area, Mr. Kia Nigeria promised to work closely with his cabinet and councillors to create an enabling environment for development to thrive.
Also, the vice chairman-elect for Brass LGA Mr. David Peremote and his Yenagoa LGA counterpart, Mr. Monday Sylvanus lauded the state government for conducting what they described as “free and fair elections” and pledged to work together with their chairmen to bring development to the people.
