The probability that the proposed nationwide strike and mass protest by Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, and other Trade Union Congresses to hold tomorrow, Monday 28 is still very high, as the emergency meeting on Sunday with the Speaker of House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila was ended in a deadlock
The Speaker according to the report available to NewsportalTv, was on his way to the Presidential Villa to seek the audience with the Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo in an urgent move to avert the strike.
This comes minutes after the meeting between the Speaker and organised labour ended in a deadlock.
Speaker Femi Gbajabiamila at the meeting appealed to the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress in Abuja in a last minute intervention to stop the proposed strike action and protest billed to start tomorrow Monday 28th September throught the 36 states of the federation and FCT Abuja .
Speaker Femi Gbajabiamila said the National Assembly was on the same page with labour over the agitation but that a further downward trend in the economy might not favour even those that the protest tends to protect. He therefore promised to meet again with the Executive since it was agreed that there won’t be increment in electricity tariff until every home is provided with metres.
Speaking after the deadlocked meeting the NLC President , Comrade Ayuba Wahaba said the increments in the pump price of petrol as well as electricity tariff were done without consultation with the organised labour. According to him “the lack of palliatives to cushion the effects of the increase made the matter worse ” he went further to stress that the proposed strike by the organised labour will proceed unless the FG addresses the issues.
Reacting to the purpoted court order restraining the organised lanour from embarking on the strike action Mr Wabba said the labour house has not been served with the order and cannot speak on it. He, however, noted that there is a judgement of a Federal High court stopping the increase of electricity tariff which the FG has refused to obey.
According to the NLC President, the proposed strike will only fail to hold if the govt makes a u-turn before 12 midnight today.
