The Institute of Security and Strategic Studies (ISSS), today organized first annual lecture/fellows night and third investiture ceremony in Abuja.
The first annual lecture under the theme:” Our National Security Predicaments: Implications for the Current Democratic Order” held at the Shehu Musa Yar’adua Centre, Abuja.
In his welcome address, the Secretary of the institute’s governing council, Hon. Danladi Umar Abdulhameed (PhD) said national security is the security of a nation against all forms of threats including; war, terrorism or espionage.
He further explained that the call for national security is a collective one. The sovereignty of the state must be guaranteed by a democratic and patriotic government, which in turn must be protected by the military, police, and the people themselves.
He concluded that the institute is committed to protecting nation’s security in a way that the electorate shall have confidence in nascent democracy.
While delivering the lecture at the event, former Director General,NIPSS, Prof. Ahmed Danfulani has enumerated many factors responsible for the spate of insecurity in the country.
According to him, abuse of the rights of citizenry by the military and other security agencies has caused the nation to lose her pride in the midst of her citizens.
Speaking further, he lamented that Nigerians in the recent time, had experienced a state of anarchy resulting to the collapse of government institutions, lawlessness and nepotism contrary to the expected dividend of democracy.
He however cautioned the majorities in the socio-political space to avoid spirit of arrogance and embrace peaceful coexistence in the country.
